Described as a highly competitive wood bat league that provides a place for collegiate players to showcase and develop their talents in a positive baseball environment both on and off the field -- with the hope of becoming future Major League baseball players -- the Generals are replacing the St. Joseph Saints, who have folded to make way for another professional baseball team.
Things opened up in the second period as the Players put 12 goals on the board. I gave up one, and the score was 14-2 after two periods.
At the Awards and Recognition Banquet later in the evening, WebSports Radio was given the Ice Bears 2005/2006 Media Award for promoting Ice Bears hockey. Dan and I are honored by it and were completely surprised.
Player awards for Offensive Player of the Year went to Dan Odenwald. Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Clayton Baker who also picked up the Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
There was a tie for the 110% Performance Award as Josh Conlin and goaltender Michael Brown were praised for their contributions to the team. The "Andy Marquart" award for all around person on and off the ice went to Senior Andy Werkmeister.
This was the first year the JV team had awards handed out. The 110% Performance Award went to Andy Panullo. The MVP Award was given to Defenseman Dan Ragon who played the last three games in goal when the Varsity team took three goalies to the ACHA and MACHA Playoffs.

02/25/06 - Danville, Ill. - Now there are four teams remaining in the fight for a championship. Depaul University beat host Eastern Illinois University 5-1 and McKendree College upset the University of Iowa, 6-4 sending the Bearcats to the Silver Division Finals against Depaul at 1pm (CST) today.
In the Gold Division Finals, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville took the first game from favored Missouri University, 7-4 and Lindenwood took an overtime game from the Missouri State Ice Bears, 3-2. The Lions will play SIUE in the Gold Division Finals at 4pm.

02/25/06 - Danville, Ill. - Eight teams will converge on the Palmer Ice Arena in Danville, Illinois to see who will become the best of the best in the 2005-2006 Mid America Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament.
In the Silver Division, Depaul will look to knock off defending champs University of Iowa, though each must get past their round one opponents, to force a meeting in the championship game. Same for Gold Division rivals Missouri State and Mizzou, who must get past their first round opponents, to meet in the championship game on Sunday.

02/18/06 - Geneva, Ill. - The Missouri State Ice Bears did not play in front of a sellout crowd, but had fans cheering them on. The Mizzou Tigers, who beat the University of Michigan 4-3 in overtime to advance to the next round, became the cheering section.
In other playoff action, #8 Central Michigan University beat #5 Grand Valley State 5-2. The Chippewas will play the Mizzou Tigers in the lower bracket to see who will advance as the #4 seed in National Competition. Defending champions, the Michigan State Spartans will also advance also in the upper bracket with a 7-0 shutout of Southern Illinois, Edwardsville.

Tailgating Events Highlight Weekend Games
11/17/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Two Ice Bears pre-game tailgating events remain this season. They will be held at the Shrine Mosque, across the street from Jordan Valley Ice Park. The scheduled dates are:
Friday - 12/9/05 - 5pm to 7pm - "Greek" Night
Friday - 2/10/06 - 5pm to 7pm - "Greek" Night
Tailgating events will include food (hot dogs / burgers / chips / etc.) grilled in the parking lot area just outside the East Trafficway entrance to the Shrine Mosque, says Ice Bears General Manager Stan Melton.
The Shrine Mosque will staff their lower level bar and serve drinks from 5pm to 7pm. Inside seating is available in the bar area. The charge for food will be based on the food costs and the Shrine Mosque regular drink charges will apply, said Melton.
Hockey Games This Weekend Are Canceled!
11/17/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO. - WebSports Radio has learned that the weekend series between Missouri State and Palmer College at Jordan Valley Ice Park in Springfield will not be played. It's the third time in three years a team has backed out a week before they were scheduled to meet the Ice Bears.

"To say the word 'disappointed' doesn't even come close to say how we feel about having to cancel the games," said Missouri State Ice Bears General Manager Stan Melton today.
Fans with tickets for this weekend can exchange them for any remaining home game. |
"While we are disappointed to see Palmer College not come to Springfield this weekend, we made a major effort to recruit a team to fill the void," explained Melton. Several teams were contacted and many were either playing in tournaments or off for the Thanksgiving holidays.
During the 2003-2004 season it was Middle Tennessee State who did not show up for their games with the Ice Bears.
Then again during the 2004-2005 season the University of Illinois, Chicago was not able to play a pair of hockey games with the Ice Bears. |

Not having games this weekend puts a big dent in several events that were planned. Friday night was intended to be Ladies Night along with the second tailgating party of the season at the Shrine Mosque, which will have to be rescheduled.
The Ice Bears next games will be against the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma the weekend of December 2nd and 3rd. WSR will have the games live for you starting at 7:20pm (CST).
Missouri State Back Home This Weekend
11/15/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO. - Figuratively speaking the St. Louis area is considered home for most of the Missouri State Ice Bears, but this weekend they will return home to Jordan Valley Ice Park for two games with Palmer College.

Bears Road Trip Continues In Minnesota
10/04/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Ice Bears travel north to Minnesota for the St. Cloud Tournament this weekend. WSR will have the Ice Bears first game against Mankato State starting at 9:45pm (CST) Friday on the "Practice" rink with the pre game show at 9:35pm.
If the Ice Bears win that game they will play Saturday at 7pm against either Wagner College or the University of Minnesota. If the Ice Bears lose on Friday, they will play at 1:30pm Saturday against the loser of the Wagner/Minnesota game.

Ice Bears Get First Win Against Braves

09/24/05 - PEORIA, IL - Determined to change things after an overtime loss the night before, Missouri State (1-1) used a hat-trick from Joel Livingston to give the Ice Bears its first win of the season, 5-2 at the Owen Center Ice Arena.
Both teams traded goals twice in the first period - the Braves scoring first and the Bears countering - to tie the score 2-2. Andy Hellwig put the Ice Bears on the board first with Livingston getting the second goal.
In the second period, Livingston completed the natural hat-trick scoring twice to put Missouri State up 4-2. Dan Odenwald added an insurance goal in the third period.
Ice Bears goalie Mike Poepping had 20 saves en route to his first win of the season. Missouri State out shot Bradley University 30-22.
WSR To Web cast Three Games In 24 Hours
09/21/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Check the record books. WebSports Radio will cover one high school football and two college hockey games in a 24 hour period the weekend of October 1st.
"We're not sure if it's a record or not, but we'll have fun doing it," said Steve Casson, who along with Dan Lee will call all the action.

09/11/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Playing most of its Junior Varsity team, the Missouri State Ice Bears lost to the St. Louis Billikens 7-5 at Jordan Valley Ice Park.

It's Official! WSR Signs Webcast Agreement
08/03/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - DS Sports and the Southwest Missouri State University Hockey Club signed an agreement today for WebSports Radio to web cast the first full season of any Springfield, Missouri Hockey team.

"WebSports Radio is a first class and very innovative organization that will deliver our SMS Ice Bears games to our fans taking full advantage of the communications power of the internet," said Stan Melton General Manager of the SMSU Hockey Club.
Coverage begins Saturday October 1st, when SMS, who will then be named Missouri State University, play the University of Missouri in Jefferson City. The 2005-06 web cast schedule includes at least 28 of the Ice Bears 33 regular season games. If SMS makes the playoffs, Ice Bears fans could hear more. |
"We are very excited to have WSR bring play-by-play webcasts of SMS Ice Bears games to Ice Bears fans. Coverage of the season comes at a great time as the Ice Bears enter its 5th season and hope to contend for the Gold Division Championship in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) league," said Melton.

WebSports Radio.com To Webcast Southwest Missouri State Ice Bears Hockey
05/19/05 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - DS Sports has reached a tentative agreement with the Southwest Missouri State University Hockey Club to webcast at least 28 of the Ice Bear’s 33 regular season games for 2005-06 beginning in October.
“We are very proud to be Springfield’s first ice hockey team in history and we’re equally proud to be Springfield's first ice hockey team with regular season coverage,” said Stan Melton, General Manager of the SMSU Hockey Club.
By using the internet, listeners and fans of the Ice Bears will be able to keep up with the team from anywhere in the world.
“We are thrilled to be working with an outstanding and very professional organization like WebSports Radio.com,” said Melton. “It’s going to be great for fans, players, and ice hockey in general to make our games available through the internet.”
Several exclusive features will be available on WebSports Radio.com. "An archive of SMS games will allow fans who missed the initial live broadcast to listen to the game in its entirety, and at their leisure," said WebSports Radio.com President and co-founder Steve Casson.
“The web site will be arranged so fans can go straight to the re-broadcast without knowing the outcome first,” explains Vice President and co-founder Dan Lee. “We will also provide player rosters, profiles, pictures and stats that will add to the listening enjoyment during the game. There are a lot of advantages to doing a game via the net as opposed to radio, and we plan to bring as many as possible into play.”

The first Ice Bears webcast will also be the first meeting of any kind between the University of Missouri and SMS who will by then be the renamed Missouri State University. That game is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Other webcast games on the schedule include the St. Cloud State University Tournament in Minnesota and road games in Oklahoma City and Ames, Iowa.
"Hopefully we can bring even more games to the schedule," said Casson referring to the Ice Bears making the playoffs and ACHA National Tournament.
WebSports Radio's pregame show will air 10 minutes prior to the opening faceoff with Steve Casson and Dan Lee bringing you the webcasts.

SPRINGFIELD, MO - WebSports Radio.com has learned through reliable sources that the Springfield Spirit Junior A Hockey Team has been purchased by an investor who will move the team to Alaska. The Spirit, who ended the 2004-2005 season with a 3-2 road win over the Springfield, Illinois Jr. Blues, have played four seasons at the Jordan Valley Ice Park in Springfield, Missouri.

ST.LOUIS, MO - A short handed goal by Ft. Wayne forward Tom Nemeth with 12:15 into the second period broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Komets to a 3 - 1 win over Missouri Sunday night, leaving the River Otters in desperate need of a win as they come home trailing in the best of seven UHL first-round playoff series 2 - 0. Nearly 27,000 people showed up for last year for the Show Me STATE GAMES played through out Missouri. That earned it the designation of the largest games in the Nation. SPRINGFIELD, Ill - Winning their final game of the season 3-2, the Spirit used goals by Shane Foster, Andy Blaszak, and Reed Lally to end the Jr. Blues hopes for post season play. With Wichita Falls winning 9-0, the Jr. Blues needed a win to end the season in fourth place. See link under Headlines.
03/25/05 - NAHL HOCKEY - Springfield Spirit Lose to Springfield Jr. Blues
SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Spirit looking to spoil the Jr. Blues chances for a playoff spot, couldn't take advantage of a 5 on 3 power play in the third period and gave up a shorthanded goal to Jeff Gumaer with 15:35 left as the Blues beat the Spirit 3-1 at Jordan Valley Ice Park. Mike Janda scored for the Spirit at 5:03 of the second period with a shot over the right shoulder of Jr. Blues goaltender Wes Russell. Scoring for the Jr. Blues: Matt Stendahl at 4:45 of the first period, and Pat Lee at 14:16 of the second, his 13 point against the Spirit.
