Missouri State Wins Second MACHA Championship

02/15/08 - EAST ALTON, IL - The two time Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Gold Division Champions, the Missouri State Ice Bears, pose for a photo after a 3-2 overtime win at East Alton Ice Arena on Sunday, February 15th, 2008.

Joe Combs scored the game winner at 15:26 of overtime.

ACHA Central Regional's Are Next Stop For Ice Bears

02/19/08 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - After a team practice on Thursday afternoon, the Missouri State Ice Bears will board a bus and head to West Dundee, Illinois and Leafs Ice Center for the American Collegiate Hockey Association's Division 2 Regional Tournament.

The trip comes as the Ice Bears will stand in for teams from the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association as the lone representative with hopes of making it to the 2008 ACHA National Tournament in Ft. Myers, Florida.

"We're going to be back in Springfield ready to work," said Ice Bears defenseman David Ellis after winning the MACHA Tournament Championship on Sunday. "We have at least a month left in our season."

Missouri State will play ninth ranked Robert Morris College - Chicago on Saturday at 8pm central time and Missouri State defenseman Joe Combs says the team will be ready. "We keep building from here, we haven't peaked yet," explained Combs. "We're coming for 'em."

Going to the Nationals has been a goal of the Ice Bears since the start of the season, and they have reacted to that objective by winning all but four games played against Division 2 opponents, went on an 11 game winning streak at the beginning of the season, and posted shutouts in 3 of the last 4 games of the regular season. Michael Poepping then recorded his 3rd shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over Iowa in post-season play at the MACHA Tournament.

Join us for live coverage of the Ice Bears run in the regional tournament starting at 7:50 pm on WSR Live TV.

"We will start our coverage of the semi-final round on Saturday starting at 8:50 am," said Steve Casson. The White squad will play Marquette at 9 am on Saturday after winning the preliminary round on Friday.

Final Season Homestand Ends With Lakers and Huskers

02/08/08 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - A much anticipated game with the Grand Valley State Lakers, who are on a road trip through Missouri, showcased the final home weekend of the season for the Ice Bears. They will play a single game with the Lakers then host the Nebraska Huskers on Saturday.

Missouri State will travel and play in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament playoffs next weekend in East Alton, Illinois. They have a bye in the first round and will play Saturday, February 16th.

Ice Bears Continue Homestand with Northern Illinois

02/01/08 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Knowing they still hold the 4th spot after the 4th ACHA Division 2 Central Division ranking period came out Friday, the Missouri State Ice Bears took on a short staffed Huskies team at Jordan Valley Ice Park.

Rift Forms In WSR's Unofficial Round #4 ACHA Dll Poll

01/29/08 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - It had to happen sooner or later. After three straight polls of Steve and I seeing pretty much eye to eye, we have parted ways. At least, as far as the bottom five of our top ten are concerned. We still meet head-on through the top five (even though both of us toyed with the idea of moving Missouri State up to #3), and after that it’s ‘Katy bar the door’.

Needless to say, there will be plenty of room to argue in the MACHA forum this week!

WSR's Unofficial Round #3 ACHA Dll Poll Gets Muddy

12/19/07 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - As the first half of the 2007-2008 hockey season wraps up, the top three teams remain the same in our poll for period three of the ACHA Division II Central Region.

From there, the picture will continue to get muddy as the season progresses. Once again, keep in mind that the records shown differ from the ACHA listings as we include overtime losses (OTL) as simply losses. Happy Holidays!

Ice Bears Travel To Icy Iowa For Games With Cyclones

12/01/07 - AMES, IA - Ice and snow greeted the Missouri State Ice Bears Saturday morning in Ames, Iowa.

Help Send WSR To The Florida Road Trip and Nationals

11/29/07 - SPRINGFIELD , MO - It is difficult for Dan and I to ask for help since it is not our nature to make this our plea, but the final tabulations of the cost of WebSports Radio.com going to Florida to cover the big games between Missouri State University and Florida Gulf Coast on January 11th and 12th are in - and to make a long story short - we need your help!

As most of you may or may not know, WebSports Radio has been operating at our own expense for the past three years, using our love of hockey to bring listeners the game broadcasts on Missouri State Hockey. The sponsorships currently heard on our broadcasts directly support the 12 Ice Bears games on Springfield radio. At this point, we at WSR receive direct financial assistance from the radio station or the team itself.

Unfortunately, we cannot foresee the ability to afford two trips to Florida this year, and we must plan for the good possibility that the Ice Bears will be going to the same location (Estero, Florida) for the ACHA Division II National Finals.

Despite the team’s generosity (which covers some costs of transportation and lodging) the remaining costs are out of our reach, without sponsorships. The only way we will be able to do the January broadcasts without putting ourselves in serious financial peril is with the support of others who have enjoyed our broadcasts.

We know many of you may (and are) already directing your financial efforts towards the team itself, which is as it should be. But if you are not otherwise committed, we would appreciate your help so that everyone can enjoy the games live from Florida.

We would like to offer our broadcast services in other ways: If you have a business to advertise, this would be an ideal opportunity for you. You could be the exclusive title broadcast sponsor of WSR's coverage!

If you just enjoy listening to the games (or possibly watching from Florida if we have a high speed internet connection), this would be an ideal time to show your support!

Please contact us at at our contact page if you can and would like to help send Dan and Steve to cover the Missouri State Ice Bears in Florida.

Ice Bear - Tiger Rivalry Continues At Neutral Site

11/23/07 - WEBSTER GROVES, MO - Missouri State and Missouri play in Webster Groves Ice Arena for a Thanksgiving meeting, which is the third of four games between the two teams this season. "We'll just start a new streak," said Ice Bears center Danny Bethmann after the Ice Bears loss to Minnesota-Mankato last Saturday.

Missouri State will stay on the road and visit Iowa State D1 on Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm. Join WSR for the pre game show both nights live at 7:20pm.

WSR's Unofficial Round #2 ACHA Dll Poll Now Out

11/22/07 - 1:09am - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Sanctions against Ferris State, which is now listed as 1-15-1 in the ACHA standings, really shook things up this period. For instance, one of Grand Valley’s losses was to Ferris State and is now listed as a win. The ISU Redbirds benefited from a couple of artificial wins in this manner also.

Injuries and grades are starting to mount as well, making this period of the ACHA Division II poll a good challenge for Steve and I.

But here they are, for better or worse, along with our reasoning of course. As usual, Steve and I did our polls independently and then scored them 10 points for first down to 1 point for tenth. Enjoy!

WebSports Radio To Broadcast JV Games

11/02/07 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Missouri State's Junior Varsity games against Robert Morris College (White) will be broadcast by WebSports Radio as a replacement for open Varsity game dates November 9th and 10th after Palmer College left the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association.

Both of the JV Ice Bears’ games have been moved to 7:00 p.m. and will be treated just like Varsity games. "The atmosphere both nights is going to be just like the big club," said Ice Bears General Manager Stan Melton.

The JV White team is 8-0 going into games this weekend and it will be the first time the squad will be playing in place of the Varsity team at home.

11/10/07 - The Ice Bears won 8-3 on Friday and 6-1 on Saturday to improve their record to 11-0-1 on the season.

Ice Bears And Redbirds Meet For Weekend Games

11/02/07 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - After a two week layoff from the ice, the Missouri State Ice Bears were home with the Illinois State RedBirds looking to lengthen their winning streak to 9 games in another Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association match-up.

The Ice Bears will be back at Jordan Valley Ice Park Saturday with the Redbirds at 7pm and we'll have the pregame for you at 6:50pm live on WSR and KBFL 99.9 FM in Springfield.

WSR's Unofficial ACHA Division ll Central Region Top 10

10/30/07 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - The real pollsters will tell you it is a heck of a thing to try and take the best of the best and rank them in order. Ten different pollsters will give you ten different results, which is why things like this are done by committee rather than placing the burden on one particular individual.

Pollsters are often limited by certain rules that the average fan isn’t aware of as well. For instance in ranking the Division II teams, a pollster is supposed to disregard how those teams did against Division I teams.

Steve and I have long believed that, in truth, it is impossible not to take such things into consideration when assessing the value of a team, and we will not put that restriction on ourselves.

Therefore, take into consideration when reading our poll that our rules may differ slightly from those who have been chosen by the ACHA to perform the official task at hand. Those rules (or criteria), according to the ACHA website, shall also include strength of schedule, head to head, comparative scoring, and overall win/loss record, in no particular order.

We're Trying Something New This Hockey Season

09/08/07 - OZARK, MO - There's less than 13 days as I look above at the red counter that's counting down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until the 2007-08 Missouri State Ice Hockey season starts.....and I can't wait.

Getting back behind the microphone is one reason, but another important reason is because we are going to be trying a different way to bring you broadcasts this year.

Along with audio, you will be able to watch selected hockey games on WebSports Radio's Live TV. Game audio will still be heard, but when available we will have live game video. Just click on Listen Live above and you will be taken to a new page.

Included is a better chat interface, and this year fans will be able to ask questions or comment on the game live. We may even use your question on the air too.

Dan Lee wants you to... "remember this is an experiment and we're not entirely sure about the outcome, but we want you to have a different way to watch the Ice Bears."

Now, there are a few factors that will determine if we run an audio or video broadcast. One factor is the availability of a high-speed internet connection, which is needed for video. At almost every arena we did not broadcast from that type of connection, so it will be a hit-and-miss proposition.

Hopefully with advancement in technology, we'll be able to have more video broadcasts at home and on the road in future seasons.

Game audio will still be available in the archive section free, and you will be able to bring your portable radio to the games to hear the action live on 99.1 FM inside the arena.

A produced video of each game will also be available, and we will have pricing information on this DVD soon.

Is the National Championship A Dream For Missouri State?

07/29/07 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - As the 2007 Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Champions, the Missouri State Ice Bears still have a long way to go according to six year Head Coach Benjamin Alexander, who says he'd like to have the Ice Bears capture the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II National crown some day.

That’s my impression of a conversation with Alexander before the Ice Bears mini-camp July 29th at Jordan Valley Ice Park, in Springfield.

“I wouldn’t mind having to play in Florida twice this season,” said Alexander. The Ice Bears will travel January 11th and 12th, 2008 to play Florida Gulf Coast University, who will also host the ACHA Nationals in March.

Missouri State is now considered a significant college hockey program in the Midwest. Under Alexander’s leadership the team has progressed from a small club team with a few friends and ice rink staff watching, to several (1,100 seat) sell-outs in the past two seasons and high caliber player recruitment for the Ice Bears hockey program.

I remember mentioning during a broadcast on WebSportsRadio.com last year a defenseman from the visiting Bradley Braves looked up into the overflowing stands then mouthed the words "Do you believe this?" to his teammate as the Ice Bears were being introduced before the start of the game. Something that happens frequently now at JVIP.

The east rink ice is freshly painted with a huge bear head as large as the center ice circle and I ask forward John Odenwald (Jr) if he’s looked at the logo. “It’s absolutely huge,” he replied. “Unbelieveable!”

For several returning Ice Bears players; Captain Dan Odenwald (Sr), Bobby Saitta (Sr), Clayton Baker (Jr), and Joel Livingston (Sr), this weekend was not the first time to lace up their skates.

“I have been playing for over a month,” said Livingston as he walked past me before heading into the locker room mentioning that he also played in several tournaments. "I believe I've played more hockey this summer than anyone else returning or incoming."

The Senior forward and a compliment of 54 other hockey players packed the Springfield ice rink on the final day with hopes of being invited to team tryouts in late August.

Most players attended a preview of what Missouri State Ice Hockey is all about while some, still in high school, will be left with a huge impression – and may be persuaded – when it comes to making a choice of where to play college hockey.

“We had 55 plus prospective players come to the camps this year and I believe there will be several forwards to replace some players we lost from last year,” said Alexander. Graduating Seniors Andy Hellwig, Jon Baeten and goaltender Kevin Rekowski along with other players, who either left to concentrate on school or transferred, has lead to some sizeable skates to fill.

Defensively, coach Alexander is not worried. “We are going to have a great defensive unit,” he explained. “Last year was one of the best defensive teams we’ve ever had, and this year looks even better.” Baker (12G, 31A) and David Ellis (Sr) (12G, 15A) lead the team in defensive scoring during the 2006-2007 season.

Even goaltending got a boost with 8 net minders attending the mini camp. "With (Michael) Poepping back and me fighting for the starting role," said goaltender Michael Brown (Sr). "Another goaltender in the mix would push both of us, and be a positive influence."

Scheduling games is a little different this season. Shying away from the hefty assortment of D1 level teams, the Ice Bears will drop games with the University of Oklahoma and only play two with the University of Central Oklahoma. They'll add St. Louis University on their schedule after a two season absence, and the two road games with FGCU.

Another change is hosting two teams in two nights over a weekend. “Playing one team on one night and another the next night makes that single game very important,” says Alexander. “Not that every game is not important, but knowing you are playing the same team again the next night means there might not be the sense of urgency to win.”

Those games are scheduled for the end of the season on weekends when Missouri comes in Friday, January 25th and Southern Illinois – Edwardsville plays on Saturday. The schedule repeats February 8th with Grand Valley State and February 9th with the University of Nebraska.

“We're also trying to fit in a preseason game with Lindenwood University the week before we start the season on the road with Central Oklahoma,” said Alexander.

Missouri State’s success has also affected their rival, the Missouri Tigers. Three of the four games between the two teams will be played at JVIP this year. “ Since the ice park attracts more fans, both teams have agreed to move the games to Springfield,” said Ice Bears General Manager Stan Melton.

October 5th (which will be the home opener) and 6th is when the Ice Bears and Tigers will first meet. “It’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere,” explains Melton. “We have several alumni events scheduled, and it’s a traditional rivalry that has become even more exciting over the past few seasons.”

Both teams will play a neutral site game in Webster Groves, Missouri during Thanksgiving weekend, which is sure to pack in the rink since much of the team is from the St. Louis area.

August 30th will be one date that will be exciting for both players and fans. That’s when the 2007-2008 Varsity team will be announced. Both prospects and returning players will be heading to a week long tryout beginning August 22nd.

I’m just wondering if I should tell Coach Alexander about the dream I had the other day of announcing Missouri State as the 2008 ACHA National Champions? I’m sure that’s his dream too.
