Ice Bears Name 5th Head Coach In Team History

04/14/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Second time is a charm for Bob Bucher as he becomes the 5th head coach in Missouri State Ice Bears hockey history.

A resident of St. Louis, Bucher had the chance to become boss two seasons ago but circumstances prevented that.

After experiencing the run to the National Championship with the Affton Americans Central States U18 team in 2006, and running into former Ice Bears head coach Benjamin Alexander, Bucher knew at some point that coaching at the college or junior level was where he wanted and needed to be.

“I remember Benjamin being at our games back then telling me the story of the Missouri State program and looking for players to complete that story,” says Bucher.

Bucher is another coaching chapter joining Alexander (119-76-9 in six seasons), Mike Schroeder (41-33-2 in 08/09 to 09/10), and Tony Dunseith (30-41-1 in 10/11 to 11/12).

No Rebound For Ice Bears In MACHA Tournament

02/17/12 - KANKAKEE, IL - Missouri State played a tough game against the Illinois State Redbirds, but still fell short when ISU's Eric Brown (17th) scored on the 3rd rebound attempt with 3:44 to go in the 3rd period in a 4-3 loss at Ice Valley Center.

Overtime Not That Friendly To Ice Bears

02/11/12 - WEBSTER GROVES, MO - Overtime has not been a good friend to the Missouri State Ice Bears and considering this season has seen a record of extra minutes played to mention game one went into overtime is like picking a fight.

Overcoming a 2-goal deficit and taking the lead with 1:47 to play in the 3rd, Missouri State struggled as Saint Louis tied the contest then won 5-4 with 34.4 seconds remaining in the additional period.

Game two was one for the record books as the Ice Bears scored 6 unanswered goals including the game winner with 46.2 seconds left during a 6-5 overtime win.

The win secured a 5th place spot in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament next weekend in Kankakee, Illinois on February 17th, 18th, and 19th.

MACHA Hockey Playoff Possibilities Explained

01/30/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - After careful calculations with my crack staff of analysts, who have determined all possible scenarios, presented below are the various ways the Missouri State Ice Bears can advance in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association Gold Division Playoffs hosted by Ice Valley Centre in Kankakee, Illinois on February 17th, 18th, and 19th.

The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in the regular season will earn a bye in the first round on Friday night.  On the 17th, the 3rd seed will play the 6th seed at 6:00 PM and the 4th seed will play the 5th seed at 8:30 PM.

Saturday will have the 2nd seed play the highest seeded winner from Friday games at 6:00 pm then the 1st seed will take on the lowest winning seed from Friday at 8:30 pm.  The Gold Division Championship Game will be Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Scenario #1

If Saint Louis University (SLU) Billikens win their 4 remaining league games with the Ice Bears and Kansas Jayhawks, they would have 19 points and jump ahead of the Ice Bears into 5th spot. That would drop Missouri State down to 6th.

Now, if Northern Illinois (NIU) sweeps their remaining games with Mizzou, they would secure 6th and eliminate the Ice Bears from the playoffs.

To avoid this Missouri State needs at least split with SLU.

Scenario #2

If the Ice Bears spit with SLU and the Billikens go 3-1 in their remaining games, while NIU wins their remaining 2 games with Missouri, the Ice Bears would be tied with NIU at 17 points for 6th spot.

Missouri State would be tied in Wins (8) and Won-Lost games Head to Head. The tie-breaker would move to Head to Head Goal Differential. The Ice Bears would lose based on a 16-13 (6-3 W, 7-13 L) goal advantage by NIU and be out of the playoffs.

Scenario #3

If Missouri State sweeps SLU that will give the Ice Bears 19 points and a tie with Illinois State for 4th, who have completed MACHA play.

The Ice Bears would be tied in Wins (9) and Head to Head. The tie-breaker would move to Head to Head Goal Differential. The Ice Bears would lose based on a 9-7 (6-5 W, 1-4 L) advantage by Illinois State and end up 5th place.

Scenario #4

If Missouri State splits with SLU and the Billikens go 1-4 in their remaining games, and NIU sweeps Mizzou the Ice Bears end up in 6th place.

Scenario #5

If Missouri State splits with SLU and the Billikens go 1-4 in their remaining games, and NIU loses 2 to Mizzou the Ice Bears end up in 5th place.

Scenario #6

If NIU loses 2 to Missouri, the Ice Bears end up in 6th even if they are swept by SLU.

Bottom Line:

A sweep against SLU will guarantee Missouri State a 5th place spot. A win over SLU and an NIU loss will guarantee Missouri State a 6th place spot.

Division III Team

Missouri State's Division III team will play in the Silver Division Playoffs, which will return to The Owens Center in Peoria, Illinois on Friday, February 10th and conclude Sunday, February 12th.

The top four teams from the Northern Conference and the top four teams from the Southern Conference will make the playoffs.

On Friday the Ice Bears DIII team will play in Quarter-Final action at 11:00 am against the #1 seed in the North Division, which currently is Marquette University.

The Semi-Finals will be at 3:45 pm and 6:30 pm on Saturday, and the Silver Division Championship Game will be played on Sunday at 1 pm.

Rivalry Heats Up With Missouri Tigers This Weekend

01/23/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO (updated) - In state rival, the Missouri Tigers, ranked 3rd in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association visit Mediacom Ice Park this weekend for a series with the Missouri State, ranked 5th, that are critical in the league playoff race and could determine either a 3rd, 4th, or 5th place spot for the Ice Bears.

The team this weekend is promoting "White-Out Mizzou" asking fans to wear all white.

Missouri State (#11 ACHA Central) is 7-4-1 in MACHA with an overtime loss to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and has 15 points.

With games this weekend and two with Saint Louis University on February 11th and 12th, the Ice Bears can end up with 23 points and a 4th place finish in Gold Division play.

Missouri (#12 ACHA Central) are 9-2-1 in MACHA, have 19 points, and will have games remaining with Northern Illinois after this weekend.

Missouri has 27 possible points and could secure a second place spot behind SIUE, who claimed a first round bye (and the league lead) after a sweep of the Ice Bears on January 14th and 15th in East Alton, Illinois.

After a November 4th, 2006 loss to the Tigers, Missouri State has won 12 consecutive regular season meetings with the last win arriving Nov. 25th, 2011 on Jack Ryan's goal with 65 seconds to play in the 3rd period.

The Tigers defeated the Ice Bears 3-0 in MACHA play on Feb. 20th, 2009 enroute to a league championship.

Although Missouri State has won the past five "Show Me Showcase" games in Webster Groves, Missouri annually held during Thanksgiving weekend, the MACHA matches on the other hand have become much more competitive with playoff positions on the line.

Don't let the Ice Bear's 7-game winning streak fool you. This is a Tigers team that has put together a good scoring threat and has bolstered their defense.

Splitting with Eastern Illinois University last weekend by similar 5-4 scores, the Tigers are 13-7-1 and have one overtime loss during 2011-2012.

Missouri State (15-13-1) took two games from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Danny Walsh, Nick Webb, and Ross Agrest lead Missouri with 11 goals a piece.

Missouri State's Jack Ryan tops the Ice Bears with 38 points (19 goals, 19 assists) but Andy Draper is the leading goal scorer with 20 tally's.

No Lack Of Excitement With Replacement Team

01/20/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - What was a 3-3 tie turned out to be an exciting finish for the Missouri State Ice Bears in a 10-3 victory over the visiting University of Wisconsin - Platteville Pioneers, a fill-in team this weekend.

After the University of Kentucky was unable to make the trip the Pioneers, accepting an invitation to play in Springfield, showed what their journey to the next level in their hockey history will be like after holding the Missouri State Ice Bears even through two periods in game one.

If there was any doubt game two would be an Ice Bear rout, the University of Wisconsin - Platteville ended that thought scoring 1:11 into the first period.

Missouri State fended off a tough Pioneers team, who stayed strong through the second period and the start of 3 unanswered Ice Bear goals, in a 3-1 win at Mediacom Ice Park.

11/04/11 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Tied after three periods, the Missouri State Ice Bears and Illinois State Redbirds, two evenly matched teams, took their time to decide a winner in game one of the series.Derek Bartsch scored in the 4th round of a shoot-out to give the Ice Bears a 6-5 win, the team's 5th overtime game and 2nd win in a shootout.

Steve Lombardo faced 48 shots and used help from Pete Cero, clearing the crease on a shot through the goal mouth, and Bartsch's work in the shoot-out to give the home team an important MACHA League win.

Game 2

It may look like the Missouri State Ice Bears were filleted after a 4-1 loss to the Illinois State Redbirds.

The ingredients made for a great game until a short-handed goal by Connor Anderson with 7:56 to play in the 3rd period, expanded a 2-1 Redbird lead late in the game.

Kim Makes Debut In Ice Bears Meeting With Arkansas

10/28/11 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Justin Kim waited 14 games to make an impact on the ice for the Missouri State Ice Bears. The Canadian, by way of Phoenix, Arizona, scored his first goal and drew a few Arkansas penalties during the Ice Bear's 5-3 win over the Razorbacks in game one.Taking advantage of defensive lapses and what the Arkansas coaching staff calls a "trap system" helped the Division 3 Razorbacks pull out a 5-3 win over the Missouri State Ice Bears in game two.

Division 3

The Ice Bears Division 3 team came back from a 2-0 deficit and scored 4 goals in the second period en route to a 5-3 win over Robert Morris - Chicago (White) Eagles in the first game of the series.

MACHA League Games Continue With Loyola On Road

10/14/11 - WILMETTE, IL - Jack Ryan's goal in overtime gave the Missouri State Ice Bears a 5-4 win and a sigh of relief after trailing 4-1 with less than 17 minutes to go in the third period of game one against the Loyola University - Chicago Ramblers.

Ryan drove the puck past the glove and shoulder of Ramblers goaltender Bill McGrenera (32 shots, 26 saves) with 3:09 remaining in the extra period to cap off the comeback win.

"We started off slow but the team showed resilience and we battled back," said Ice Bears assistant coach Jeff Crenshaw.
