Regionals Rematch With Michigan State Next

02/22/13 - NORTHBROOK, IL - With a 5-3 win over the SIUE Cougars in round one, Missouri State will play Michigan State in a rematch of the 2008-2009 ACHA DII Regional tournament, a 3-0 loss to the Spartans in round one.

Missouri State also played Michigan State in 2005-2006 losing 8-1 in the second round of the regional tournament after defeating the Robert Morris - Chicago Eagles 4-3 in overtime.

This will be the third time these two teams will meet. Ironically, all meetings will be in the ACHA DII Regional tournament.

Game One vs SIUE

Missouri State will meet their Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association foe, the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars once again.

Last weekend both teams met in the MACHA playoffs. The Cougars won 4-3 on Jared Ippolito's goal with 1:14 to play in the game.

This time it will be in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Regional Tournament in Northbrook, Illinois, on Saturday.

The Ice Bears have won 2 of 3 meetings this season against the Cougars.

Ice Bears Looking For Wins Against Cougars

01/18/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - The last time these two teams met it wasn't pleasant for the Missouri State Ice Bears losing both games to the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars.

Giving away a pair of 2-goal leads, the Ice Bears lost in the first game 8-7 in overtime then a wild 9-6 affair in the second.

Jared Ippolito, who's power play tally with 1:55 to play in game one helped to tie the score, leads the Cougars this season with 26 goals and 22 assists.

Ranked No. 6 in the ACHA Central Region the Ice Bears, who have won 15 of their last 18 games, will face a No. 3 Cougars team that was just swept by No. 1 Grand Valley State.

Meanwhile, Missouri State's Jack Ryan (32 goals, 19 assists) leads the Ice Bears in points and has an Ice Bears' record 13 game goal scoring streak.

Last season Missouri State landed in 5th place in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association standings, while SIUE has clinched the Gold Division title with the first win.

Currently the Ice Bears (8-3-1) sit in fifth place and SIUE (10-3-1) is tied for second.

This series will be one of the most important of the season, if not Missouri State history.

Second Half Of Season Starts This Weekend

01/11/12 - GENEVA, IL - Moments away from the start of the second half of the Missouri State Ice Bears 2012-2013 season, all indications are that the team is ready.

"The time off was good," Junior Blake Ryan said while getting on the bus early Friday morning. "We needed this time to reset. We are ready to play."

Missouri State brings back the entire compliment of scoring and defensive power including leading scorer Jack Ryan (30 goals) which is a franchise record.

Blake is third with 16 goals. Andy Draper is second with 17 tallys.

Ice Bears 2012-2013 First Half Of Season Notes

12/23/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - With Christmas approaching, I thought about giving the best gift I could give at this moment and share some stats and records achieved by the 2012-2013 Missouri State Ice Bears Hockey team.

So, I've made a list and checked it...four or five times....

This year's Ice Bears team is currently 17-5 and have started the first half of the season with the best record in Missouri State Hockey history.

Wow. I believe another page needs to be dedicated to these records, so click to the right for the rest of your Christmas gift from me.

Team Records Possible Against Panthers

12/07/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Records are made to be broken and they also are set. On pace to start the first half of the season with the best record in Missouri State hockey history, the 2012-2013 Ice Bears needed one win to top the 2007-2008 season start of 14-5 and assure their place in team history.

History was made with a 7-4 win in game one of the series against the Eastern Illinois Panthers.

Also broken was a 2006-2007 record for short handed goals when Jack Ryan (7th, 8th) notched a pair and Dylan Clark (1st) added one to give the Ice Bears 19 disadvantaged scores.

Game Two

Saying the Missouri State Ice Bears scored 5 power play goals and won the hockey game 14-0 over the Eastern Illinois Panthers - but those are not records this season - shouldn't come as a surprise.

Two goals and 3 assists from Adam Otten, a goal and a pair of assists from Nic Sadorf along with two goals from Jack Ryan added to Missouri State's rout of the Panthers.

The Ice Bears (17-3-0-2, 6th ACHA Division 2 Central) finished the first half of the season the same way they started the season, by not giving up a goal. This time it was Justin Davis sharing duties with Sam Jones.

Pioneers Next Up For Ice Bears At Home

11/02/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers will bring an 0-2 lifetime record to Mediacom Ice Park for games with the Missouri State Ice Bears this weekend.

Last season the University of Kentucky was unable to make the trip and the Pioneers accepted an invitation to play in Springfield. UWP showed what their journey to the next level in their hockey history will be like after holding the Ice Bears even through two periods in game one.

But a barrage of 5 goals in 3:13 broke game one wide open for Missouri State with 5 minutes to play in the 3rd period during a 10-3 win.

In the second game, the Ice Bears fended off a tough Pioneers team, who lead 1-0 midway through the second period until the start of 3 unanswered Ice Bear goals, in a 3-1 win at Mediacom Ice Park.

The line of Dylan Clark, Jack Ryan, and Blake Ryan combined for 15 points: J. Ryan (2 G, 2 A) B. Ryan (2 G, 4 A) and Clark (4 G, 1 A) in 2 games.

Missouri State was 1 for 7 on the power play and Wisconsin - Platteville went 1 for 7.

This Season

Currently, J. Ryan leads the Ice Bears 21 goals and 14 assists, while Blake is second with 14 goals, and 16 assists.

Three players (B. Ryan, Andy Draper, and Jake Guthrie) lead the Ice Bears with 4 power play goals.

J. Ryan has 5 of the team's 14 shorthanded goals, and Draper has scored 3 game winning goals.

Wisconsin - Platteville is lead by Riley Zehner with 12 G, 8A and 3 power play goals. Tom Kelly (10 G, 1 A) is second, tied with Tony Schultz (3 G, 8 A) for the Pioneers.

Just 4 players are in double figures in scoring.

The Pioneers are 7-1 in the MACHA Silver Division, but plan to move into the Gold division in the future.

The Weekend

Friday's game is “Greek Night” with free general admission tickets to the first 200 students wearing their greek letters clothing.

Saturday's game is “Military Night” and current / retired members of the military receive a free reserve seat game ticket and their friends / family members can purchase a reserve seat ticket for half price ($4.00) at the Mediacom Ice Park ticket sales booth.

The Saturday game is also “Ladies Night” with free general admission tickets to the first 200 ladies.

Saint Louis Stops Missouri State Win Streak

11/02/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Many times in hockey a team can dominate the play for several minutes only to have the other team score a goal and the Saint Louis Billikens remembered it can still be possible against the Missouri State Ice Bears.

The Billikens scored at 13:36 on Sean Lamb's deflection after the Ice Bears began the game hitting, skating, and out playing their guests in the opening minutes of what became a 5-3 defeat.

Game 2

Someone brought a bunch of mirrors into Mediacom Ice Park and the Missouri State Ice Bears saw their reflection turning game two into a 7-2 win.

This time Saint Louis put on the pressure early in the game, hitting, passing, and starting the game strong, but it was Miguel Franco who gave the Ice Bears a 1-0 lead with his 6th of the season at 16:13 of the opening stanza.

St. Louis Blues' Hitchcock And Staff To Coach Team

11/07/12 - PRESS RELEASE / SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Missouri State Ice Bears Coaches and Players will be hosting the Head Coach of the St. Louis Blues, a 23 seasons NHL veteran and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, a former NHL goaltender and current St. Louis Blues color analyst and NBC “NHL on NBC” reporter and the St. Louis Blues Video Coach as these members of the St. Louis Blues organization meet Ice Bears fans at 7:45pm and lead an 8:15pm Ice Bears practice session at Mediacom Ice Park on Thursday night, November 15th.

“We are honored to have Coach Ken Hitchcock, Al MacInnis, Darren Pang and Coach Danny Brooks coming to Springfield to meet our Ice Bears fans and lead our players in a team practice session,” said Missouri State Ice Bears Head Coach Bob Bucher.

The practice is free and the Ice Bears are asking fans to bring a food item or a toy to the team practice session to be donated to The Kitchen organization in Springfield.

“We invite our fans to come out to join us and watch these highly regarded NHL veterans and members of the St. Louis Blues organization share their knowledge and skills with our Ice Bears players and coaches.”

Missouri State Wins Again; Ranked 6th In ACHA Central

11/02/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Continuing their dominance in the opening few minutes of games, the Missouri State Ice Bears scored 1:13 into the contest and never looked back during a 6-0 win over the University of Illinois.

A late posting of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II Central rankings shows the Ice Bears 6th after the first ranking period.

Missouri State has not given up a goal in 69:49 going back to 10:11 of the 3rd period in game two versus Iowa. The streak extended thanks in part to Justin Davis' third shut out of the season turning away 20 shots.

The Ice Bears are 9-2 when scoring first and in the past 7 games in which they have grabbed the first goal, Missouri State has won those games.

Game Two

Scoring first is beginning to be a good habit for the Missouri State Ice Bears. Derek Bartsch (7th) gave the home team the lead en route to a 4-2 win over the Illinois Fighting Ilini and their fifth victory in a row.

Missouri State held Illinois off the scoreoard until Matt Crook (6th) found the lower left corner of the net past Steve Lombardo (22 shots, 20 saves) to break the shut-out bid with 4:10 to play in the game.

Up to that point the Ice Bears had held opponents scoreless for 125:39 going back to 10:11 of the third period in the second game versus Iowa.

Missouri State Scores 29 Goals In Sweep Of Iowa

10/27/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO. - The Iowa Hawkeyes were seeing red after a 13-1 loss to the Missouri State Ice Bears and it was not because the ice surface at Mediacom Ice Park was painted for breast cancer awareness.

In Game two, four shorthanded goals and hat tricks from Andy Draper and Blake Ryan lead to a 16-2 rout of the Iowa Hawkeyes and a sweep of the series.

Missouri State scored two short-handed goals on the same penalty kill, an Ice Bear team record, and it happened twice in both games which is also a team record.

Pink Ice This Weekend For Breast Cancer Awareness

10/22/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO. - When the Missouri State Ice Bears step on to the ice this weekend at Mediacom Ice Park something is going to be a little different. “Pink The Rink” is back for its second year and players and fans alike can not be more excited.

The Ice Bears will face off against the Iowa Hawkeyes this Friday and Saturday with the opening face off at 7:00pm each night. A silent auction will be held during both contests for a chance to win custom “Pink” Ice Bears jerseys.

Several players and staff members weighed in about the event:

“The games last year were an amazing event that very few hockey players get to experience,” explained Senior Captain Derek Bartsch. “I am enormously proud to be apart of an event that helps so many victims of this horrible disease.”

This year’s game will benefit the Breast Cancer Foundation Of The Ozarks. Community Olympic Development Program Coordinator Joe Combs expressed his opinion on the foundation who serves local cancer patients in the Ozarks.

“Last year was a huge success and this year I am extremely proud to once again help give back to the local communities.” Combs added, “This event is bigger than a hockey game and more driven towards serving people throughout the Ozarks with the care and support they need.”

Tickets are available at all MSU TIX locations (417-836-7678) through Friday morning then at Mediacom Ice Park an hour before game time.

MACHA Gold Semi-Finals Rematch This Weekend

09/28/12 - BLOOMINGTON, IL. - After a loss in the MACHA Gold playoffs to Illinois State this past February the Missouri State Ice Bears face the Redbirds at the US Cellular Collesum with not only a different team but a much more potent offense.

Game #1

Call it a nightmare or just dumb luck but the Ice Bears suffered another overtime / shoot out loss to the Illinois State Redbirds, this time 3-2.

Derek Bartsch and Jack Ryan failed to score in the shoot out while Eric Brown and Brian Reimel had scores for the Redbirds.

In regulation play, Matt Townsend scored his first of the season on a pass from Justin Kim just 1:40 into the game.

Trent Webb scored at 17:00 faking Ice Bears goaltender Steve Lombardo (32 shots, 30 saves) to the right for his first of the season.

Missouri State took the lead with :24 to play in the opening period on a give-and-go with Townsend, tipping the puck past ISU goaltender Ryan Suizdak (27 shots, 25 saves).

Connor Anderson tied the game on a blast - from just inside the blue line on the left side that found the left post - to even the game with 3:44 to play in the second period.

Both teams did not score on the power play. Missouri State had 5 attempts and Illinois State was given 9 advantages.

This season the Ice Bears have outscored opponents 42-6. Goaltenders have recorded 2 shutouts and special teams have been outstanding with 14 power play goals on 27 tries (51.9%) and a penalty kill of 90.5%. The Ice Bears have managed 3 shorthanded goals too.

Both teams are sure to compete for top honors in MACHA Gold and this series is no exception.

Last season the Ice Bears had a 5-4 shoot out win over the Redbirds and a 4-1 loss in the regular season.

Three Ice Bears are in double figures with Blake Ryan leading all players (7 goals, 5 assists) and Jack Ryan (8G, 2A) and Andy Draper (6G, 4A) adding a scoring punch. Draper has 3 power play goals and is tied with Jake Guthrie.

Missouri State Stuns Lindenwood In Game Two

09/21/12 - WENTZVILLE, MO - The stands remained full as the buzzer sounded ending the hockey game. Missouri State had just presided over an 11-1 knock out of the Lindenwood Lions on their own ice.

Andy Draper had a hat trick and the Ice Bears scored 7 power play goals during the largest margin of victory against the Lions in team history.

Jack Ryan's shorthanded goal gave Missouri State the advantage :49 seconds into the game and Draper notched a power play goal 14:24 later.

All of Draper's tallys came on the power play while Adam Otten, Blake Ryan, Chris Moseley and Jake Guthrie also scored with the man advantage.

Blake Ryan matched brother Jack with a short handed goal himself.

Justin Davis gets the win facing only 18 Lions shots, a team record, and put 51 shots on Steven Willett (39 in first 2 periods) and Tim Craig, who faced 12 in third period.

Game One Goes To Lindenwood In Overtime

09/21/12 - WENTZVILLE, MO - No team had more than a 1 goal advantage in the game and the lead changed hands 5 times, but ultimately it took 2 extra minutes for the Lindenwood Lions to win 5-4 in overtime against the Missouri State Ice Bears on Friday night.

Brennan Devers found Ice Bears goaltender Justin Davis (54 shots, 49 saves) leaning to his left and shooting from the left side to score the game winner 2:00 into the extra period.

"We know what we have to do, this was anybody's game tonight," said Ice Bears head coach Bob Bucher.

Behind Jake Guthrie's power play goal and Andy Draper's 3rd of the season, the Ice Bears erased the opening goal by LU's Scott Lesilie.

Detrick Pierzinski tied the game again on a power play goal in the second period and Christoffer Roos sent back a rebound shot of Pierzinski's for a 3-2 Lions lead at 8:42.

Jack Ryan found the upper corner above LU goaltender Tim Craig's glove (50 shots, 46 saves) for a power play goal tying the game at 3-3 with 44.1 seconds left to play.

Mitch Galligan's wrap-around goal (on the power play) evened things at 4-4 with 7:50 showing on the game clock.

"I think we turned some heads tonight," said Bucher. "Many people came up to me saying they couldn't believe how quick we were as a team tonight."

Opening Series Of The Hockey Season A Rout

09/14/12 - TOPEKA, KS - It took 3:55 for the Missouri State Ice Bears hockey team to show they mean business in the 2012-2013 season with an 18-0 win over the University of Kansas Jayhawks at Landon Arena.

Missouri State set a team record for most goals in a game, largest margin of victory and most players with 4 goals in a game.

Bucher Pleased With Ice Bears Mini-Camps

07/22/11 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Opening Day couldn't come any sooner for Bob Bucher. The new Ice Bears head coach is looking toward the 2012-2013 season with big expectations for the veterans and incoming class.

Bucher spoke during a break in on ice activity to discuss the status of the team and what he sees for the future of the 2012-2013 season.

2012-2013 Hockey Schedule May Define Season

07/20/11 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Looking at the game schedule for the 12th season of Missouri State Hockey chances are a new-look Ice Bears team will be tested early in the season with 10 of the first 12 games on the road.

Fortunately, the next 17 of 19 games thereafter will be at home in Mediacom Ice Park.

"The way the schedule worked out this season puts us on the road early, but we end up at home when most of the students and fans traditionally attend games," said Ice Bears General Manager Stan Melton.

Having to fulfill commitments to Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) teams left open areas which created the scheduling sequence.

Missouri State starts with the University of Kansas in Topeka on September 14th, and 15th then meet the Lindenwood Lions in Wentzville, Missouri on September, 21st and 22nd and Illinois State redbirds on September 28th and 29th.

"Both weekends against Lindenwood and Illinois State will direct our season," said head coach Bob Bucher.

Playing tough opponents Lindenwood (#4 in ACHA DII Central) and Illinois State (#9 in ACHA DII Central) will be one of the biggest tests for the Ice Bears so early in the season.

You will have to go back to the 2006-2007 season when Missouri State opened on the road at Lindenwood (with 6-2 win, over the Division 1 team) then faced the University of Oklahoma Sooners.

During the 2009-2010 season when Missouri State opened with Eastern Illinois but faced Ferris State at home then Davenport University, the University of Ohio and Colorado State in the DII Showcase.

The home opener with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks will be a short respit then the Ice Bears are back on the road with the Ferris State Bulldogs and Robert Morris-Maroon Eagles.

Starting October 26th, Missouri State will have the luxury of playing the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, University of Illinois Fighting Ilini, Saint Louis University Billikens, University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers and Eastern Illinois Panthers through December 8th, 2012.

After road games with the Northern Illinois University Huskies, the Ice Bears stay local from January 18th, 2013 with the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans, Missouri Tigers and Loyola University-Chicago Ramblers though February 2nd, 2013.

"We talked during a meeting in April and set a team goal. Everyone is on board with it," said Bucher during the Ice Bears mini-camp. "The goal is to play on the last day of the year; playing for a national championship."

Ice Bears Name 5th Head Coach In Team History

04/14/12 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Second time is a charm for Bob Bucher as he becomes the 5th head coach in Missouri State Ice Bears hockey history.

A resident of St. Louis, Bucher had the chance to become boss two seasons ago but circumstances prevented that.

After experiencing the run to the National Championship with the Affton Americans Central States U18 team in 2006, and running into former Ice Bears head coach Benjamin Alexander, Bucher knew at some point that coaching at the college or junior level was where he wanted and needed to be.

“I remember Benjamin being at our games back then telling me the story of the Missouri State program and looking for players to complete that story,” says Bucher.

Bucher is another coaching chapter joining Alexander (119-76-9 in six seasons), Mike Schroeder (41-33-2 in 08/09 to 09/10), and Tony Dunseith (30-41-1 in 10/11 to 11/12).
